Student Background
A chemistry major undergraduate from a top university in China. He applied for the MBA program of Heriot-Watt University in Singapore.
Student’s Needs
Before entering the MBA, student has the goal of pursuing a doctorate degree in the UK after graduation, with the goal of getting into G5 institutions. After understanding the application requirements of the Doctorate studies, we design a clear plan for students to do well in his current Master’s program. However, after starting his studies in Singapore, student found that he cannot adapt to the learning method of the school and has difficulties understanding the contents in class, and could not do anything about the assignments given by the professor.
Assessment of Student
Before entering the master's degree, students did not understand the English learning ways, and it was his first time doing a program in full English. As such, it was very normal that he did not adapt at the beginning of the semester. Although he has strong learning ability, he did not understand the methods to reading English literature and the requirements of English academic writing.
Offered Solutions
In view of the student's situation, we matched a Chinese tutor who graduated with a Doctorate from G5. At the initial stage, the learning was done in Chinese and the tutor provided key guidance and related homework guidance for courses that were challenging. We arranged 1-2 times a week to sort out the knowledge points of the learning content of the week, and once a week for homework guidance.
Sort out or answer student’s queries about the learning content of the week in 1-2 class hours every week
One class hour homework tutorship every week
Review before the exam and explain the wrong questions of Past Paper
Learning Feedback
Through the tutor's guidance, the student gradually mastered the professor's teaching methods and corresponding learning methods, and successfully achieved the initial goal in the final examination. During the course, the student also communicated with their supervisors about his ideas and intended research fields for doctoral studies. The supervisor explained the current research projects in some colleges and recommended relevant reading literature. This allow student to have a clearer understanding and a clearer goal for future doctoral research.
